Review 2015 – Preview 2016
Dear Readers and Friends of Rheinhütte Pumpen,
An exciting and eventful year is again coming to an end for us all.
One of the highlights was Achema 2015, the world’s leading trade fair for our sector, in which we have participated continuously since 1925. As part of our customer event we presented the new pump test bench and Customer Competence Centre in Wiesbaden.
Also during this year, we again successfully completed many interesting projects and won new orders:
The largest order in our company’s history provided all departments with exciting challenges. In the spring of 2015, a total of 85 complete pump units were delivered to the Waad Al-Shamal Phosphate Industrial Complex of the plant operator Ma’aden Phosphates.
In addition to some very interesting orders for liquid sulphur applications for Saudi Aramco and Petronas, we realised other major projects worldwide for some of our key applications involving materials expertise, including at Lifosa in Lithuania, Yara in Norway, KLJ Organic in Saudi Arabia, Nirma Limited in India, EtiBakir in Turkey and UHDENORA in Italy.
We received the order for an interesting research project for Honeywell in the US through Bertrams Heatec AG, involving vertical pumps of the GVSO series.
In the area of molten salt as a heat transfer medium, we won a prestige project in China for a solar demonstration plant of our customer SUPCON.
We are constantly working on the development of internal company procedures and production processes. The capacity planning software introduced in 2014 began to bear fruit at both plants in 2015: we were able to significantly improve our delivery reliability, especially for spare parts and in the individual pumps business. Upon completing the commissioning of the new pump test stand in 2016 and the related capacity expansion in Wiesbaden, we will take another major step forward.
We are very satisfied with the growth in sales of metal and ceramic pumps. 2015 will be one of the best years for us, although here again we are feeling strong cost pressure from the growing global competition in the market.
Unfortunately, we did not achieve all our targets. The worldwide overcapacity in the steel industry and the associated, almost completely halted investment is having a negative impact on the goals set in the field of plastic pumps. In this business segment we remain behind our expectations in 2015.
The picture from the regions is extremely varied. In the MENA region, we had a very good year. In Russia and the CIS countries, despite the Ukraine crisis and the associated exchange losses of the rouble as well as the imposed sanctions, we booked a good level of orders. In Germany and Europe, we experienced a rather average year. Asia remained far below expectations. In China, for example, the government revised the growth figures downwards several times while local competition also sharply increased. In South America, Brazil is currently deeply immersed in a politically induced crisis which is affecting the whole region.
Despite all the uncertainties, we look forward to new challenges in 2016 and hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you, our customers, to our new Customer Competence Centre in the New Year.
On this note, we wish you and your families a Peaceful and Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Successful New Year!
FOR EXTREME PUMPING TASKS
Further Development of the GVSO:
The safe pumping solution for high-pressure and high-temperature applications
Our submersible chemical pump GVSO is used for pumping aggressive, hot and contaminated media. The vertical pump enables safe pumping of acids and alkalis in any concentration and temperature range. The most important applications include the pumping of molten sulphur in the chemical and petrochemical industries as well as hot molten salt in solar thermal tower power plants, where the GVSO has successfully proven itself for several decades.
In order to meet the increasing future needs in these areas of application, we have further developed our GVSO range of pumps: the new multistage vertical high pressure pump design enables flexible immersion depth adjustment for flow rates of over 1,000 m3/h at temperatures of up to 600o C with a pressure requirement of 64 bar. The delivery head was increased by 150 m, so that the GVSO now achieves a delivery head of 320 m.
The new design combines the reliable advantages of the previous GVSO, such as flexibility, safety, long service life and ease of maintenance, with the future market requirements and thus assumes a pioneering position in high pressure and high temperature applications.
The mineral cast for plastic pumps
Rheinhütte Pumpen has added its extensive pump programme – based on metals, plastics and ceramics to a new material. With the new composite material Polymercarbid you now have even more flexibility in the choice of materials – especially for particularly difficult applications involving abrasive, corrosive, alkaline and fluoride media.
A POWERFUL COMPOSITION
Polymercarbid is a composite material with a high proportion of silicon carbide (SiC) which is embedded in vinyl ester (VE) resin. The manufacturing process ensures a pore-free and very homogeneous structure. This results a compact and highly wear-resistant material whose extreme hardness of 9.7 Mohs is just below that of diamonds.
Polymercarbid: The more cost-effective material compared with other conventional materials in the long run, especially in applications with high wear and tear.
Restructuring of the sales region Leipzig from 01.01.2016
In the New Year, an important change will take place in the allocation of the sales territory in Germany. The departure of our long-standing and highly esteemed colleague Axel Götze from Leipzig at the end of the year requires a reorganisation of the Eastern Federal States: the sales territory will be divided.
For the South East region (postal code areas 01-09, 34, 36 and 99), we have appointed Georg Kieffer, who has been working as a sales representative for the NRW South region for more than 5 years. Mr Kieffer takes immediate responsibility for customers in Saxony and Thuringia and will operate from the Wiesbaden head office. He is also your new contact for our liquid ring vacuum pumps FGP. Claus Stelter of the Hamburg Technical Office will take over the North East region (postal code areas 10 – 19 and 39). Mr Stelter has worked for Rheinhütte in external sales in Germany for 14 years.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Axel Götze most sincerely for his long, dedicated and successful service. We wish him and his family good luck and only the very best for this new stage of life.

First trade fair appearance in the new corporate design at Achema 2015 in Frankfurt
In March 2015, we informed our business partners that in future we will market our products and services under the umbrella brand Aliaxis & Utilities Industry. In this way, we want to make clear that, as part of a financially strong, globally active group of companies, we are a reliable partner.
ACHEMA 2015 in Frankfurt offered the first major opportunity to present our new brand identity: in combination with our new umbrella brand Aliaxis Utilities & Industry, on a total of 300 m2 of exhibition space, alongside the Ceramics Division and the company FIP and SED Flow Control, we presented our new, unified exhibition concept. The large open stand concept aroused the attention of visitors from afar. Lengthy stays and the varied and positive feedback which the new image aroused in our customers and business partners completed the successful presentation.
Visitors were particularly interested in our new application-specific solutions for the reliable pumping of difficult media.
For high pressure and high temperature applications, the GVSO series with its further development to an enhanced, multi-stage hydraulic design, assumes a pioneering position here.
And with the impeller made from Polymercarbid mineral casting, we now offer you a compact and highly wear-resistant material, which promises significantly longer service life and thus more favourable life cycle costs, especially in chemically aggressive media.
In the daily lecture series “Relevant criteria in the selection of materials for the use of pumps in difficult media”, our material experts examined a variety of topics that addressed the problematic applications of our visitors. Regardless of whether the topic dealt with pumps in sulphuric acid, pumps in phosphoric acid, the subject of pitting or the advantage of plastic pumps in pickling plants: together with the visitors, an intense discussion was held as to which pump materials and sealing concepts are best suited for the individual application. The importance of the correct choice of materials was also illustrated by presenting examples of damage to impellers from different applications.
